Sarajevo to complete new terminal by late 2020

Construction of Sarajevo Airport's new passenger terminal is progressing with work scheduled to be completed by November 2020. "Currently, this is our most important investment where we will increase capacity by 900.000 passengers per year. We signed the construction contract in August 2018. Although work was delayed by two months due to complaints from one of the parties taking part in the tender, we are now progressing full steam ahead", Sarajevo Airport's General Manager, Armin Kajmaković, said. He added, "We will get 10.000 square metres of extra space spread over four floors, twelve check-in desks and new air bridges. In total, the airport will have the capacity to handle two million passengers per year". The new terminal will be linked to the existing one to form a single functioning unit.

Work has also begun on the construction of a small stand-alone VIP terminal. "In line with other modern airports across the globe, Sarajevo will have its own exclusive VIP lounge at a separate location, which will offer direct access to the apron", Mr Kajmaković said. The facility will spread over 300 square metres and is valued at 770.000 euros. Construction work is expected to be completed within the next nine months. Sarajevo Airport will also build a new business and administrative building which will house offices for staff. Valued at 3.1 million euros, the new facility will be located in between the new passenger terminal and control tower.

Sarajevo Airport will also undertake airside work as part of its modernisation project. The main apron will be expanded, while the overhaul on the runway and taxiways is also expected. It has been described as an "extremely challenging project", valued at 10.2 million euros. Sarajevo airport handled 174.508 passengers during the first quarter, representing an increase of 3.2%. It added an additional 5.384 travellers on the same period last year. Over the next month, Flynas is due to launch services from Riyadh to Sarajevo, Eurowings will commence new flights from Berlin, Aegean Airlines will inaugurate operations from Athens, while FlyBosnia will commence commercial flights.
