Sarajevo Airport terminal construction advances


The construction of Sarajevo Airport's new passenger terminal is advancing with work scheduled for completion by the end of next year. The new facility, which will spread over 10.000 square metres, will feature twelve check-in desks, five gates and one air bridge. It will be linked to the existing terminal to form a single functioning unit with the capacity to handle two million passengers per year. "Anyone who is flying from Sarajevo Airport these days can see that we have become a big construction site. By autumn 2020, when construction work is completed, the largest and busiest airport in Bosnia and Herzegovina will be even more significant, beautiful and modern, with much more content, especially in the food and beverages sector, to the satisfaction of our visitors", Sarajevo Airport's General Manager, Armin Kajmaković, said.



Sarajevo Airport will also undertake airside work as part of its three-year modernisation project. This includes the expansion of the main apron and the overhaul of the runway and taxiways. The project has been described as "extremely challenging". Its value has been put at 10.2 million euros and no firm time-frame has been given for its completion. In addition, the construction of a stand-alone 300 square metre VIP terminal building is currently underway, with its completion expected in early 2020. Furthermore, a new business and administrative building. which will house staff office space, will also be erected. These two projects are valued at 3.8 million euros.


Sarajevo Airport is expected to see strong passenger growth in the coming months with a number of carriers recently launching new flights from Bosnia and Herzegovina's capital. These include FlyBosnia, Flynas, Aegean Airlines, Norwegian Air Shuttle and Eurowings. During the January - May period, Sarajevo Airport welcomed 338.529 passengers through its doors, representing an increase of 0.4%. This summer, Dubai will be the most served route from Sarajevo, followed by Istanbul, Sharjah, Vienna and Zagreb.
