Ryanair to discontinue Tuzla flights
Low cost carrier Ryanair plans to discontinue flights to Tuzla from June 1. The airline commenced operations to the city last November with services from Vienna, Memmingen and Stockholm Arlanda Airport. All three routes are also served by Wizz Air, which boasts a base in Tuzla, although the carrier maintains services to Stockholm's Skavsta Airport instead. In a statement to EX-YU Aviation News, the airline confirmed the routes were being discontinued.
Ryanair currently maintains two weekly flights from Tuzla to Memmingen, ending May 30, three weekly rotations to Vienna, which will be discontinued on May 30 too, as well as two weekly flights to Stockholm, ending May 31. Passengers who had tickets booked past these dates have begun receiving notifications of their flights being cancelled. Ryanair had initially scheduled flights to Tuzla back in 2021, however, discontinued sales on its initially planned routes from Weeze and Baden Baden after the head of the Supervisory Board of Tuzla Airport said the local government did not sign off on an agreement with the airline so as not to put its business partner, Wizz Air, in an “unequal position” and cause “unfair competition”. Eventually an agreement with Ryanair was struck the following year.
Ryanair entered Bosnia and Herzegovina’s market in 2018 with services to Banja Luka. The airline's Director of Route Development, Ray Kelliher, said last year, “We look forward to growing in Bosnia and Herzegovina over the coming years and being able to announce more new and exciting routes for next summer”. Based on existing capacity, Ryanair will hold a 17% market share in the country during the first full month of the 2023 summer season (April) compared to 36% held by Wizz Air. Ryanair is Europe's largest airline, the largest low cost carrier, and one of the world's largest airlines as measured by international passengers carried.
