Luxair outlines Montenegro expansion plans

Luxembourg’s national carrier, Luxair, will enter the Montenegrin market this February with flights from its hub to Podgorica but plans to expand operations over the coming year. The airline has upgraded its service to the Montenegrin capital to year-round operations and will introduce seasonal summer flights to Tivat as well. Based on current plans, Luxair will inaugurate services to Podgorica on February 12 with two weekly flights, each Monday and Friday, with the 76-seat Dash 8 turboprop aircraft. As a result, the airline plans to offer a total 1.976 seats on 26 flights between the two cities (both directions included) until the start of the 2021 summer season on March 28. Over the summer, the airline will continue serving Podgorica each Monday and Thursday with 9.424 seats on offer across 124 flights.

Luxair will also inaugurate seasonal summer flights to Tivat starting May 15. Services will run once per week, each Saturday, with the 141-seat Boeing 737-700 jet. A total of 21 flights will be operated until October 2 with 5.922 seats on offer (both directions included). It marks the first time Luxembourg’s national carrier will serve Montenegro and the first time the two countries have been linked with a scheduled air service. Luxair was to initially start flights to Tivat in the summer of 2020, however, those were cancelled. Services to Podgorica were to commence two weeks ago but the airline delayed the launch due to the worsening epidemiological situation across the continent.

Luxair has said flights to both Podgorica and Tivat are its priority in 2021. Montenegro has the largest diaspora in Luxembourg of all the former Yugoslav republics, with over 4.200 Montenegrin passports registered in the Grand Duchy. However, according to estimates, 8.000 Montenegrins live in Luxembourg, most of whom possess Luxembourgish nationality. Serbia is in second place with approximately 2.300 passports. The Podgorica service will primarily target the diaspora, while the seasonal Tivat flights are aimed at tourists. Further flight details for the new Podgorica route can be viewed here, while additional information for the Tivat flights can be found here.
