Skopje Airport notches up 64 months of growth


Skopje Airport has recorded a remarkable 64 months of consecutive passenger growth, with its figures continuously increasing since January 2014, when it was affected by adverse weather conditions, forcing its closure on several occasions. During the first five months of this year, Skopje Airport handled 842.737 travellers, representing an increase of 7.8%. According to the State Statistical Office, it added an extra 61.296 passengers on 2018. Over the same period, the airport recorded 7.096 aircraft movements, an improvement of 3.5%. Skopje processed 1.636 tonnes of freight and mail, up 50.5%. Since the start of the year, Wizz Air introduced two new services from the Macedonian capital, to Baden Baden and Bremen, with a further two, Turku and Larnaca, to launch towards the end of next month.

Wizz Air accounted for the overwhelming majority of passengers carried at Skopje Airport during the January - May period, with its share at 66.4%. It was followed by Turkish Airlines with a 7.2% share, Austrian Airlines with 5.1%, Chair Airlines (formerly known as Germania Flug) with 4.5%, Pegasus Airlines with a 3.1% share and Edelweiss Air and Croatia Airlines with a joint 2.8% share of all passengers handled. Istanbul continues to be the most popular destination, with 10.3% of all passengers either arriving or departing from the city's two airports. It is followed by Zurich with a 7.3% share, Basel with 5.5%, Vienna with 5.2% and Wizz Air's Malmo and Bratislava routes with a 4.5% and 3.4% passenger share respectively.

Skopje Airport's existing connectivity

Jointly, Skopje and Ohrid airports handled 914.759 travellers during the January - May period, representing an increase of 11%. "The number of passengers is continuously increasing as a result of the dedicated work of the TAV Macedonia team, which strives to provide quality services in every segment of our operations. The continuous increase in the number of passengers served at Skopje International Airport and St Paul the Apostle in Ohrid during the first half of the year, as well as the upcoming new routes planned, gives us the right to be satisfied with our work and the results achieved", the General Manager of airport operator TAV Macedonia, Alper Ersoy, said. In addition to Wizz Air's two new services from Skopje, which are to be launched on July 24, the budget airline will also commence flights from Dortmund and Memmingen to Ohrid on July 2 and 26, while Eurowings will inaugurate services between Dusseldorf and Ohrid on July 7.
