Zagreb Airport upgrades carbon accreditation
NEWS FLASH
Zagreb Airport has upgraded its Airport Crbon Accreditation, an independent, voluntary program which aims at reducing CO2 emissions at airports, and is now one step away from carbon neutrality. The airport has now entered Level 3 - optimisation. The optimisation step of Airport Carbon Accreditation requires third party engagement in carbon footprint reduction. Third parties include airlines and various service providers, for example, independent ground handlers, catering companies, air traffic control and others working on the airport site. It also involves engagement on surface access modes (road, rail) with authorities and users. In recent years, Zagreb Airport has introduced a number of measures to monitor and reduce its energy consumption, through the installation of efficient LED lighting, low voltage reconstruction in the transformer station, boiler room reconstruction, reconstruction and modernisation of the heating/cooling substation and hot water through the use of solar collectors. Thanks to these activities, the airport’s carbon emissions were reduced by 4% between 2017 and 2019, despite a significant increase in the number of passengers handled. Plans for the airport include the construction of a photovoltaic powerplant which will enable the direct conversion of solar energy into electricity and the replacement of existing vehicles and equipment with more environmentally friendly options. "Zagreb Airport is committed to implementing business solutions that aim to reduce negative environmental impacts. Achieving Level 3 is an extremely important step in these efforts. Our goal and commitment is to achieve zero CO2 emissions by 2050 and we will be persistent on that path”, the airport's General Manager, Huseyin Bahadir Bedir, said.
